The hidden cost of your coffee habit

Did you know that across the UK, Britons drink 95 million cups of coffee per day? We really are a nation of coffee lovers, and with syrups, speciality blends, alternative milks and extra toppings added to the mix, the variety (and the cost!) grows by the year.

Many of us get our caffeine fix from coffee shops on our way to work, out walking the dog, popping in with the kids or on the way home from a night shift.   It’s a common habit and one that we may not even think about – a so-called ‘invisible purchase’ which somehow doesn’t count for many of us when thinking about our spending.

To put the cost into perspective, if we bought a coffee at the start of every working day, we would be spending almost £600 a year – or an average of £9,092 over our working lifetime (based on London prices). And of course that cost goes up if we are tempted by a croissant or muffin every now and then too....

Even reducing our intake by just one takeaway coffee a week can really add up – that represents a saving of £143.52.  To try to break the habit and bring down your spending, perhaps consider swapping to a cheaper type of coffee, or a tea, or even bringing a hot drink from home – and watch those savings add up, little by little.
