Getting started in self-employment

One of the income-maximisation ideas we share on the Money Course is to start your own ‘side hustle’ - and for some people, a hobby or sideline can turn into a business opportunity.   But getting started in self-employment can be tricky and complicated, so we’ve pulled together some useful resources to help if you’re thinking about taking the plunge.

The Rebel Business School is a great resource you might like to start with - we’ve had good feedback from people who have used this site.

Banks are a good source of support in this area - try your own bank or browse the free resources on other banks' websites, most of which are open to all - e.g.:

Lloyds

Barclays

Natwest

HSBC

If you are under 30, you could try Business tools | Tools and resources | The Prince's Trust (princes-trust.org.uk)

And finally, local councils often offer support to those starting up their own business - Google the name of your council and ‘self-employment’ as a starting point.
