Food-sharing apps

Did you know that across the world, one third of the food that’s produced gets wasted? Now you can make a difference to reducing that statistic as well as grabbing an edible bargain or freebie!

A great innovation in recent years, food-sharing apps connect local restaurants, cafes, bakeries, supermarkets and producers, who are offering food that would otherwise be wasted, with people who would appreciate some free or heavily discounted food! The food will usually be nearing its best before or use by date but always in an edible state when passed on to the customer.

Two of the best-known are Olio and TooGoodToGo - they work in different ways:

TooGoodToGo offers £5 ‘Magic Bags’ which can be reserved through their app - these are ‘mystery bags’ containing surplus food from one of the participating companies- you collect from their location and enjoy the contents!

Olio is free to benefit from, with no fee for collecting food, and adds neighbours into the mix by also matching what they have to offer to locals who are looking for free food.
